When you turn to your phone for answers and communication, but it is not responsive, it can send your heart into a panic. If you own a Samsung Galaxy or other type of android phone, you need to know how to troubleshoot the issue to bring it back to life. Here are a few tips to help you find the issue and restore function to your android phone.
Charge It
The most obvious answer to why a cell phone will not turn on is the battery. Even if you thought your phone was charged, plug it in for at least 15 minutes to see if it comes to life. If nothing comes on the screen when you press the power button, try charging it at a different outlet or with another charger to rule out a charging issue.
Reset the Computer
Smartphones are computers with hardware and software. Sometimes, like most computers, they can freeze and need a manual shutdown and reset to restore function. If you are sure your phone has a charge, but still will not turn on, try holding the power button for at least 10 seconds – in some cases, it may take up to 30 seconds. This should turn off the phone and reboot the system. You can also remove the battery to do this, but many android devices do not have a removeable battery.
Bring It for Diagnostic Testing
If neither of these options brings your phone back to life, make a trip to your local cell phone repair shop. Many will do free diagnostic testing to determine the problem, giving you the option to have it repaired or decide whether it is time to upgrade to a new device.

Considering how much you use your cell phone, it is almost guaranteed that eventually it will come in contact with water. While a little sprinkle of rain is unlikely to damage your phone, if it lands in a pool or puddle, it may be at risk. The electronic components inside and the battery are easily damaged by water, but you can often minimize the risk of complete failure by acting fast when your cell phone is exposed to water.
Do’s and Don’t’s After Cell Phone Water Exposure
The first thing you want to do after a phone has been submerged in water is remove the battery, sim and memory card. Pat the phone dry with a soft cloth to remove excess water. Air drying with the removeable parts exposed can be the best way to mitigate any damage.
What you should not do is try to turn your phone on or push any buttons. This can push water into your phone. Also, limit moving your phone and do not try to use a hair dryer or heat to dry your phone; this can cause more damage. Wait for at least 24 hours before putting the parts back together and attempting to turn on your phone.
Fixing Water Damage
If your phone does not turn on after waiting for 24 hours, or if it turns on, but is not working correctly, bring it to a cell phone repair shop. It is possible that the phone can be fixed – it may just need a component repaired or replaced. A cell phone repair expert can determine the best options to salvage your phone, or at least the data inside, to minimize the inconvenience and cost of a cell phone water accident.

Most cell phone carriers offer phone insurance to protect against damage, loss or component failure. With the high cost of iPhones and other brands of smartphones, this can seem like a good idea. However, the cost to cover your phone for replacement or repair can cost a $100 or more per year. Is this insurance worth the cost or would it be better to put that money away in case you need a repair?
Ten or more years ago, phone insurance was a good idea. If your cell phone stopped working or was damaged, you had no local options to get it fixed. Phone insurance was the only way to get your phone repaired or replaced without having to pay full retail on a new phone between upgrades. Times have changed. Now almost every mall has one or more cell phone repair places that can fix your cell phone on the spot. No sending your phone away or waiting on hold when you call to use your insurance. You can walk in to a repair shop and walk out in no time at all with a repaired phone.
Phone insurance has become almost obsolete. No one wants to switch over to an old phone for a week or longer while they wait for a new phone to come in the mail. There is also usually a deductible to pay on top of the monthly premium, so it can cost more than a local repair.
Skip the phone insurance and put that money in a piggy bank instead. If you do need a repair, you will have the money to get it fixed the same day. If you don’t, it will be money you can put toward your next upgrade when the time comes.
