Be E-Green in 2016

One of the faster growing pollutants ending up in landfills is also one of the most popular electronic devices around: the cell phone. While most electronics like televisions, DVD players and computers are used for many years until they breakdown or become obsolete, cell phone users often replace their phones every year, even when the one they have works fine. This craving for new technology is creating a backload of used phones that are getting thrown away, often into the trash system.

Cell phones are toxic to the environment when allowed to be burned or added to landfills due to their components. Most contain myriad toxins such as arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel and zinc, as well as flame retardants in the plastic housings. Many of these elements are considered Persistent Bioaccumulative Toxins (PBTs) and can enter the air or groundwater as contaminants if not disposed of properly.

So what should you do with your old cell phones and other mobile devices to be E-green in 2016? Why recycle them, of course! There are many materials that can be reused and when recycled properly, those toxins can be kept out of landfills. There are many e-recycling centers that will take your old cell phones and tablets to recycle, but there is a way to make some money and recycle at the same time.

Some cell phone repair shops in local malls and shopping centers will buy those old cell phones and tablets you have no use for, recycling them for parts and materials. Even cell phones that no longer work or are obsolete may be worth a few bucks. It is a great way to do the environmentally responsible duty while getting a little money for those old devices.

Is Your Roof in Danger of Springing a Leak?

Posted in Roofing

A leaking roof can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your home, often occurring without your knowledge. A small leak can start as a drip, moistening materials in your attic, without dripping down into your ceiling of your top floor. This can go on for months, allowing that moisture to build and create a hazardous mold problem without any sign of water in your home. By the time a big storm hits and a major leak is detected, you may already have a home with excessive water and mold damage. To prevent this expensive and health-hazardous occurrence, you need to stay on top of your roof maintenance.

When was the last time your roof was inspected by a professional? If your roof is several years old or older, it may be beginning to show signs of wear or damage. Even newer roofs can be damaged during hail storms and other extreme weather conditions. All it takes is for a shingle to become lifted, allowing water to penetrate the material underneath or a screw to come loose on your metal roof. Before long, that water will rot the material underneath and begin dripping into your home.

The best way to prevent leaks and the ensuing damage cause by the water and mold in your home is to have annual inspections of your roof. A professional roofing company can perform a thorough inspection to ensure that your roof is protecting your home from water damage, replacing shingles or tightening screws as needed. This small maintenance step is a solid investment into your home, protecting you against expensive roof repairs, water damage and mold removal expenses in the future.

Finding a Conveyor Belt Repair Service

Posted in Conveyor Belts

In the world of manufacturing, nothing can slow down production quicker than an assembly line that stops moving. Everything depends on those conveyor belts to continue to move products from one station to the next, whether it is on the production floor or in the shipping warehouse. When one of your conveyors breaks down, you need a fast, dependable service on speed dial to get your line up and moving again. Don’t wait for an emergency to happen. Research and find that company now and add them to your emergency contacts. Here is what to look for:

  • A company with decades of experience. You want a conveyor service company that knows this industry inside and out, with many years of experience.
  • Conveyor experts.  Don’t settle for a company that repairs all types of industrial equipment. Find a conveyor expert that specializes in providing conveyor parts, repair service and installation. They will find the problem faster and have the right parts to fix the issue.
  • Fast service and troubleshooting experts. When you work with a company that knows all the ins and outs of conveyor belts, they are quick to find the problem.  In many cases, just describing your issue over the phone can pinpoint the problem to an experienced conveyor service technician. They can then come prepared with the right parts to get your operation up and running fast, saving you time and money.

Finding a conveyor service company that offers all these qualifications is not easy, but worth the search. When it comes to something as important as keeping your production floor moving, you only want the best service available.

3 Reasons to Get Your Cracked iPhone Screen Repaired Today

It happens every day. An iPhone gets sat on, dropped or takes a tumble, leaving the screen cracked. If it happened to you, your first concern was whether your trusty iPhone still worked. You were probably relieved when you could still use the screen, even though it was difficult to see certain areas on the display. You vowed to get it fixed, soon. Days go by, then weeks and you are still living with the same cracked screen. While it may be working, somewhat, here are three excellent reasons to have that screen fixed today.

  1. Functionality. Your iPhone may work but when the screen is cracked, you lose function. There are parts of text that are difficult to see and areas on your screen that don’t respond to touch. Why live with partial function on your phone?
  2. Increased damage. The longer you live with a cracked screen, the more likely your iPhone will be further damaged. Moisture can seep into your phone through those cracks, causing more detrimental damage to the components in your phone. Plus, the screen will only continue to crack more and become more expensive to fix.
  3. You can get your screen fixed in minutes. Most towns and cities with a shopping center or mall have fast iPhone repair services that can fix your phone in just a few minutes. You don’t have to send it out of town or reload your apps onto another phone; just drop in and get it fixed in a jiffy while you wait.

You spend a lot of money on your iPhone – don’t live with screen damage another day. Stop by your local iPhone repair shop and have your phone looking and working like new again in minutes.

What Part of Your Metal Stairs Need Repair?

Posted in Metal Stairs

If you own or manage an apartment building or other type of commercial building with metal stairs, you rarely will need to concern yourself with their construction. After all, metal stairs last for years, even decades, without needing repairs. However, even metal will eventually wear down with use and exposure and when it does on a staircase, it can become a hazard. You will need a metal stair fabricator to repair certain parts, but which ones? Do you know the names for the parts of your stairs? Here is the simple breakdown of stair parts and terms to make it easier.

  • Balustrade. The entire railing system of a stairway.
  • Baluster. The part of the balustrade that runs in a vertical direction, holding up the handrail.
  • Bullnose (starting step). The first or bottom step, generally larger in size than the other steps.
  • Flight. On section of staircase between floors or landings.
  • Handrail. The part of the balustrade you hold as you ascend or descend.
  • Landing or Platform. This is the wider flat area at the bottom and top of each flight of staircase. Often there is a landing in the middle of staircase between floors to change directions.
  • Riser. The part of the stair that runs at a right angle at the back of the tread; the flat vertical surface of the step. (not all metal stairs have risers)
  • Stringer. This is the main skeleton of the staircase that supports the risers and treads. Usually there are two, one on each side of the staircase.
  • Tread. The part of the stair you step on, the actual steps of the stairs.
  • Winder. A tread that is wider on one side than the other to help the staircase move in a curved direction, only used on spiral staircases.

These terms can help you explain to a metal stair fabricator what needs repair or replacement. You should inspect all these parts regularly for any rust or weakening as part of your property safety regimen.

What You Need to Know About Golf Cart Battery Maintenance

Posted in Golf Carts

Your electric golf cart may not need fuel but it does rely on its batteries for energy, making them the most important element in golf cart maintenance. A quality golf cart battery can last for years if it is maintained properly. Since these batteries are expensive to replace, usually running several hundred dollars or more for two, you will want to make sure you know how to care for your batteries to get the most for your money.

Golf cart batteries require more maintenance than other vehicle batteries due to the large strain on them. They are the only source of energy for your golf cart and are depleted as they are used, similar to a cell phone battery. While a gas-powered vehicle charges up their battery with an alternator, golf carts drain their batteries until they die or are recharged, just like your cell phone, only much larger. But performing regular maintenance can help extend the life of these heavy-duty batteries.

Golf cart batteries require cleaning, watering, and charging. Here are the basics:

  •  After each use, your batteries should be charged fully. Try to always allow the battery to completely charge. Undercharging before using again can shorten the life of the battery.
  • Clean the batteries with a cloth at least once a month using a solution of ¼ cup of baking soda mixed in a gallon and a half of warm water. Wipe down, allow to sit on the battery for about five minutes, then rinse with pure water and towel dry. Make sure to wear gloves when cleaning.
  • After the monthly cleaning, check the water level. The battery should be fully charged before adding water – use only distilled water and keep at full level.

Make sure to check with your golf cart dealer for more maintenance tips for your batteries and golf cart, following the manufacturer and dealer recommendations.

3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying a New Golf Cart

Posted in Golf Carts

Are you planning to buy a new golf cart in the upcoming months? If it is your first time buying a golf cart or it’s been awhile since your last purchase, there are a few things to consider before you order your new cart. Here are three questions to ask yourself to make sure you get the golf cart that will meet your needs and expectations.

What will your new golf cart be used for?

Is this golf cart really going to the course or are you buying to hunt, for street use or for your business? How you are going to use your cart will determine the best type for your needs. For short daily use, an electric model is a good option while a gas-powered cart will work better for longer trips.

How much will your cart need to carry?

Golf and utility carts come in a large variety of sizes, from the small two-seated carts to large utility carts that can carry several people. The number of seats is important if you are using it for your business to carry groups from one place to another. Weight limits are also important when using the cart to haul heavy loads.

What accessories do you need on your cart?

Custom golf carts can now be ordered with countless accessories that can make them more functional and comfortable. Do you need a roof, a heater or mirrors? Do you need a street-legal kit added? Maybe you want a stereo or larger wheels? Look through the available accessories and make sure you get exactly what you want before your cart is ordered.

Once you know what you want, talk to your local golf cart dealer to place an order for your new cart. They can answer any questions you have to ensure you get the best cart for your needs.

Damage From Improper Pressure Washing

Pressure washers can be a great tool to have around the home. When your car needs to be washed or the front driveway is dirty, a pressure washer can quickly do the job. But high pressured water can also damage surfaces if not used properly. Even though professional pressure washing services may clean roofs, home exteriors and decks, you may do damage to these areas if you try this yourself.

Roofs

For asphalt shingled roofs, pressure washing can be damaging if not done correctly. The high pressure can strip shingles of their protective coating and loosen shingles, causing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in repairs. Many roofs need low pressure to be cleaned and must be carefully washed to not lift or damage the shingles. It is best to have a professional service that is licensed and insured perform this task.

Home Exteriors

Pressure washing is a great way to make your home look new again. However, if your home is painted, you have stucco or brick, you need to be very careful using a pressure washer to clean the exterior. Painted houses can be stripped of their paint, stucco can be ruined and bricks can be damaged. Once again, a professional pressure washing company should perform these projects.

Decks

Wood decks do need regular pressure washing to clean off mildew and grime, keeping the wood looking great. However, certain woods can be damaged by too high of pressure. If you try this yourself, be very careful and watch for signs of damage. Or, just hire a professional.

Cleaning cement, pavement or the family car are great uses for your home pressure washer, but when it comes to the big or delicate jobs, hire a local pressure washer service to get the job done right.

What Are Travertine Pavers?

Posted in Paver Driveways

If you have been considering using pavers for a new driveway, pool deck or patio, there is a good chance you have come across travertine pavers in your research. Travertine has become one of the most popular paving materials for outdoor projects, especially in warm regions such as the southeastern portion of the U.S. So what is travertine and why is it so prevalent in paving? Here are some facts about travertine pavers.

  • Often called travertine marble, travertine is not a marble at all, but instead a type of limestone. It is found in many different areas around the world, including most notably from Italy, as well as Turkey, Mexico and here in the U.S.
  • Travertine comes in a wide range of colors from pink and coral to dark tan and white. It can be tumbled and porous or polished and shiny, making it versatile and great for many uses.
  • Travertine is highly durable and is easy to maintain in outdoor paving structures. It is also fade resistant and easy to repair.
  •  Pavers can be cut in a variety of sizes and shapes, plus its natural beauty makes it wonderful for creating unique designs for patios and driveways.
  • One of the elements that makes travertine ideal for patios and pool decks is its cool exterior. Unlike bricks or cement that are hot to bare feet in the summer, travertine stays cool.

This durable, beautiful stone is one of the preferred natural stones that works well for most outdoor paving projects. If you are planning on using pavers for a new project, ask your local paving company about the option of travertine pavers.

Do You Have a Sagging Floor in Your Home?

Is there a noticeable slope or sagging in one or more rooms in your home? This is especially common in homes that are built with a crawl space underneath the home. Over time, the floor boards can begin to sag due to a lack of support. This type of issue should never be ignored. The problem will only proceed to worsen, causing safety issues and can also impact the value of your home. Often the problem can be repaired with some added support to the foundation of the home.

Most sagging floors are on homes without the steel beams under the main level flooring that are usually in place for homes with a basement. This lack of additional support allows the floor boards to sag over time. Sagging floors can also be a sign of more crucial structural damage and are an indication that the home needs foundation repair.

In many cases a sagging floor can be repaired with the addition of steel support beams under the flooring. Contractors may use floor hydraulic jacks to bring the floor back to a level position, then add steel beams and/or solid footers to support the home. This creates a solid foundation that is lacking in homes with only a crawl space underneath instead of a solid foundation or structurally sound basement that adds extra support.

Don’t live with sagging floors. Call your local foundation contractor to get an estimate on repairing your home’s support system. Not only can it improve the look of your home by leveling sagging floors, it can extend the life and increase the value of your most important asset.
