Golf Cart Theft Prevention

Posted in Golf Carts

Whether you own a golf cart for hitting the course, hunting or personal transportation, it is a sizable investment that needs protection. These vehicles are valuable, which also means they are targeted for theft. Like other recreational vehicles, golf carts are small enough for thieves to haul away in a pickup or trailer, making it easy for them to disappear many miles down the road in just minutes. Here are some golf cart theft prevention tips to help keep your golf cart safe and secure from would-be thieves.

  • Store your golf cart indoors. Don’t leave your golf cart outside. Find a place inside your garage or in a storage shed to keep it out of sight and harder to access by thieves. If you don’t have space at your home for indoor storage, consider a rental storage unit.
  • Make sure your cart is insured. Contact your insurance company about coverage on your golf cart. It may be covered for theft under your homeowner’s policy, but you may want to add separate insurance for collision, comprehensive and liability.
  • Invest in anti-theft devices. Talk to your local golf cart dealer about adding anti-theft devices for your golf cart. There are alarms and other options to protect your golf cart when it is unable to be stored inside or you need to leave it for short periods of time.

Golf carts can sell for thousands of dollars, even used, making them desirable to thieves looking for a quick score. Keeping your golf cart safe and secure can deter many thieves, as will using an anti-theft device or alarm. Protect your golf cart investment by using these golf cart theft prevention tactics to keep it secure and make sure it is insured.

Turn Your Hill into a Terraced Garden

Posted in Retaining Walls

Do you have hill or steep slope on your property? This may seem like wasted space, making it difficult to landscape or maintain. Why not make the most of this area by creating a terraced garden? Using retaining walls, you can create tiered flat areas that can be used for several different purposes. Consider these ideas for using your hill space:

  • Multiple gardens. If you can create two, three or more tiered flat areas on your hill, use each for a different type of garden. One can be flowers, another herbs and of course, one for vegetables. Your hill side will become a beautiful, useful planting spot.
  • Add a stairway. Make it easier to reach each tier by incorporating a stairway. Match your stairs to your retaining walls; natural stone or pavers make excellent materials for both retaining walls and stairs.
  • Create a patio with a view. Why not add a separate patio on one of your tiers to give you a grand view of your property? Create a paved area with a patio set or relaxing swing. It will be a nice resting spot when you attend to your gardens. You could even add a fire pit for evening bonfires.

Not only do retaining walls allow you to use your hill space, they protect the hill from erosion. The walls give the slope structure, keeping the earth in place during heavy rains and storms.

Building a tiered hillside can be tricky; if done incorrectly, it could do more damage than good. Hire a contractor to build your stone retaining walls and stairways to ensure they are done correctly so they will last for many years to come.

5 Golf Cart Safety Rules to Follow

Posted in Golf Carts

You may not view driving a golf cart as a hazardous activity, but even these small vehicles can cause injury. Just like any vehicle, safety is a concern when driving a golf cart. Although they may not be large or fast, they can cause damage or injury if not driven carefully. Here are five safety rules to follow if you own a golf cart.

  1. Do not overload. Your golf cart has weight restrictions – adhere to them. Carrying too many people or a heavy load can make it more likely to tip. It also puts undo stress on the engine and tires.
  2. Slow down. Although golf carts are not known for excessive speeds, going too fast on the wrong terrain can lead to trouble. It also increases the chance of injury or damage if you hit a person, animal or object.
  3. Stay up on maintenance. Your golf cart needs maintenance just like your car or truck. Stay up to date on tune-ups, brake inspections and other maintenance at your golf cart dealer to ensure safety and performance.
  4. Road driving. Do not attempt to drive your golf cart on main roads unless you have it equipped with a street legal kit. Without the proper equipment, this can be dangerous and illegal.
  5. Underage drivers. Be careful about allowing youngsters to drive your golf cart. It may seem like a fun toy to them, but it can be dangerous to them and others.

By following a few safety precautions, you can enjoy your golf cart without fear of injury or damage. Keep it well maintained and drive within the specifications for your golf cart to stay safe.

Maintaining Steel or Metal Staircases

Posted in Welding

If you have metal staircases in your home or business, you rely on the durability these structures. Metal is perfect for staircases due to the strength it provides, especially in industrial applications. However, even metal or steel needs regular maintenance to ensure that it does not corrode, rust or breakdown. Here are few maintenance tips to extend the life of your metal staircase.

Cleaning

Dirt, dust and debris can shorten the life of your staircase. When allowed to accumulate, the grit and grime can wear down the protective coating, exposing the metal to the elements. This will also detract from the aesthetics of the metal. Cleaning should be done as often as needed.

To clean metal staircases, you can use an all-purpose floor cleaner. First, test the cleaner on a small patch of the metal to ensure the chemicals do not cause a reaction. Once tested, you can use a stiff brush to apply the cleaner according to the manufacturer’s instructions. In outdoor areas, a pressure washer or hose can be used to rinse the stairs; be careful not to use too much pressure that could harm the coating.

Inspections

You should routinely inspect your metal staircases, testing rails and treads. If any seem loose or begin to show signs of rust, schedule a repair. A local metal fabricator that specializes in staircases can fix loose welds or replace treads that have damage.

Restoration

If multiple issues begin occurring on your staircase, it may be time for a restoration. Fixing and replacing corroded or rusted areas and adding a new coating can extend the life of your staircase by many years without the expense of replacement.

Signs of Conveyor Belt Problems

Posted in Conveyor Belts

Many different types of businesses rely on conveyor belts to maintain productivity. Whether you own a large manufacturing business or a small retail business that ships out products, you most likely use conveyor belts in your operation. A malfunction of one of your belts can cost you thousands of dollars in downtime and lost productivity. To avoid breakdowns, keep an eye out for common conveyor belt issues before they become expensive problems.

  • Belt slippage. If your belt shifts or slips during use, you may have an issue with the traction or pulley. This can be due to improper tension, debris build up or other issues. Cleaning the conveyor or readjusting the tension could resolve the issue.
  • Noticeable wear on the edges. When your belt begins showing edge wear, it is a sign of trouble. You may have uneven tension or misalignment within your track. If there is even wear throughout the entire belt, it may be time for replacement. Premature wear could mean you are using the wrong belt for your application.
  • Cracked or hardened areas. If you are noticing some areas on your conveyor belt are hardening, cracked or seem swollen, this could be from heat damage.

These can all be signs that your conveyor belt will fail if you do not address these issues. The best solution is to schedule regular maintenance for your conveyor through a reputable conveyor belt service company. Having a professional technician inspect and service your conveyor can ensure you have the correct belts, tension and traction for your application. This is a good investment in your business and can reduce the chance of costly shutdowns in the future.

Tips to Extend the Life of Your iPhone

Posted in iPhone Repairs

It is getting more and more expensive to own the latest technology. The days of free cell phones are in the past, especially if you want an iPhone. While some people can afford to buy a new iPhone every time a new model comes available, most people want to ensure their phone lasts as long as possible. Just like any device, your iPhone needs proper care to last. Here are some tips that can help you extend the life of your iPhone until you are ready to upgrade to another model.

Protect It

This should go without saying, but if you don’t already have a protective case or cover on your iPhone, invest in one now. It is only a matter of time before you sit on it, drop it or wear down the plastic from use.

Downloading Apps

Your iPhone is a mini computer and it is susceptible to viruses and malware. Be very careful downloading apps; choose a reliable source to avoid getting a bad bug that can crash your iPhone.

Battery Maintenance

Make your battery last longer by not overcharging or overusing it. Batteries should only be charged until they are full, then unplugged. Often people have apps that continue running in the background, using their battery life when they aren’t using their phone. Make sure this isn’t happening on your iPhone.

Repairs

Don’t try to do repairs on your own. If you damage the screen or your phone is heating up too fast, bring it to an iPhone repair shop. Makes sure the technicians are trained and certified for working on iPhones and that the company offers a good warranty on their repair work.

Do’s and Don’ts for iPad Owners

Are you a proud owner of an iPad? This popular device has found its way into millions of households and is loved by the young and old alike. However, it is an expensive item and can be damaged easily. Most people realize it can be cracked or scratched from impact or pressure, which is why a case or cover is recommended. But there are other ways to damage your iPad that you may not realize. Here are some Do’s and Don’ts to ensure your iPad has a long, productive life.

Do’s

  • Clean the screen. The iPad screen has a protective coating that can be damaged if not kept clean. Wipe it clean after use with a slightly damp, soft cloth to remove oils and dirt.
  • Download new updates. Apple updates for your iPad should be downloaded – these updates can improve the performance of your iPad, even saving on battery life.
  • Allow your iPad to use all of its battery once a month. Draining the battery completely down and recharging it to 100% can help improve the life of your battery. Do this once per month.

Don’ts

  • Don’t use chemicals. Never use window cleaner or other chemicals to clean the screen. This could harm your iPad.
  • Never dry with a heat source. If your iPad gets wet, don’t use a hair dryer or external heat source to dry. Dab it dry and let it air dry. Heat can damage the components.
  • Don’t try to repair your iPad. If you have a cracked screen or other issue, don’t try to fix it yourself. Bring it to a professional iPad repair store.

Following these few tips can help you protect your iPad and get the most out of this incredible device.

Inspecting Your Roof After the Storm

Posted in Roofing

It seems like every time you turn on the news, a major storm is hitting one area of the country. Hurricanes, floods, hail storms and high winds seem to be more prevalent than ever. The amount of damage these storms can do to your home is extensive – especially to your roof. Regardless of whether you have a metal, shingled or tiled roof, you should have it inspected after any major storm, even if you don’t see any significant damage.

Small Issues Can Lead to Big Problems

Obviously if you have missing shingles or major dents in your metal roof, you will want them repaired. But even the small issues can eventually lead to bigger, more expensive problems. Shingles that have the asphalt worn off or are slightly lifted should be repaired or replaced. They could eventually create a leak in your roof that will be much more expensive than a small repair.

Hire a Professional Roofer

The problem is that many homeowners do not know what to look for when inspecting for roof storm damage. Plus, it can be dangerous to go up on your roof without the right safety equipment and experience. If your home was exposed to a severe storm, call a local roofer to complete an inspection. They can determine if there is any damage. If there is, they can give you a written estimate for repair that you can turn into your homeowner’s insurance if it is covered. Make sure to hire a reputable, local roofer; “storm chasers” are on the prowl, looking to take advantage of homeowners after major storms.

Don’t assume your roof didn’t sustain damage just because there are no leaks or major issues. Call in a professional roofer to complete a thorough inspection to avoid costly repairs down the road.

Dangers of Chimney Damage

Posted in Masonry

Your chimney is a crucial part of your heating system, doing much more than just keeping smoke out of your home. It dispels dangerous gases that can be deadly to your family, while helping keep the right air flow needed to maintain your fire. Maintaining your chimney should be a top priority; this includes regular cleanings and repairs. Most homeowners that use wood heat understand the dangers of a dirty chimney, but chimney damage can be just as dangerous.

A loose brick or hole in your chimney can put your home and family at risk. Once the chimney structure is compromised, there are many possible hazards you can face. Here are a few of the dangers of allowing your chimney to function when it needs a repair:

  • Gas exposure. Any blockage or leak in the chimney structure can allow hazardous gases to escape into your home. Many of these gases are poisonous and can even cause death.
  • If one brick is loose, others may be as well. If these bricks come loose at the wrong time, they can cause serious injury to anyone who happens to under them when they fall.
  • Damage to your chimney can create a fire hazard. A chimney repair is much less expensive than needing to replace your home and furnishings, not to mention the danger it poses to your family.

If you notice any loose bricks or that your chimney is leaning, call your local masonry repair company right away for an inspection and repair. Chimney repairs can protect your home and family from extensive harm and are worth the investment.

Golf Carts: The Ultimate Wedding Rental

Posted in Golf Carts

Destination weddings are all the rage right now, with many ending up on rustic farms or on a private beach. These are wonderful settings, a nice change from the boring indoor weddings in chapels or other traditional wedding venues. However, there is one drawback to these natural destinations – they are not easily accessible. Women in high heels and grandparents with bad knees can have a difficult time reaching the spot of your planned nuptials. You need a transportation plan that will accommodate your guests.

Golf carts are the perfect solution for the destination wedding. While you may have considered every little detail of your special day, many do not consider this option. Yet it makes sense to ensure your guests’ safety and comfort. A few good reasons to rent one or more golf carts for your big day in a remote location:

  • You don’t want someone tripping on a clump of hay or falling down a dune on your wedding day. Golf carts provide a safe ride for those in dress shoes or with disabilities.
  • Comfort. A long walk to the ceremony area can be difficult for your older guests. Consider their comfort and offer them a soft seat to ride on to your wedding.
  • Bragging rights. Everyone wants their wedding to be special. Having a well-organized wedding with all the right elements in place, including golf carts with drivers, will give you bragging rights.

Before you say “I do,” head to your local golf cart dealer and inquire about rentals for your big day. Make sure to plan to have designated drivers to haul your guests to and from your destination wedding location.
